Birth of Columbie 491

During the years 2007-2011, the family sailed chartered boats 36-50 ft two to three weeks every year in Croatia. From the first trip I was dissatisfied with the design of the chartered boat. My youngest son said: “Why don`t you design the perfect boat then, you know how to do that”. He inspired me to make some drawings.

During the past five years I have made a lot of sketches, of yachts from 48 up to 57 ft and with up to nine cabins and a total of 22 berths, which may be suitable for a school ship. But after having 10 persons on-board a 50 ft yacht, there were always two too many around the dining table.

The resulting design consists of four main cabins, quite large with double beds. Most sailors prefer to captain the boat themselves, but if desired, they may wish to hire a chef, skipper or an extra hand. Consequently, there are three extra cabins available for crew accommodation.
